It was a very special evening on Sunday 23 October when we welcomed Bishop Colin for the well-attended confirmation of three Benefice members: William, Bel, and Ilona. Ascott church was looking its best for the occasion with beautiful flowers and fruit providing autumn colour on window ledges, and the warm glow of candles everywhere. The Benefice Choir gave a strong lead in the hymns and for an anthem sang the Mallaig Sprinkling Song with its lovely lilting Scottish folk melody.
Just before the confirmation itself, as they stood in front of the bishop, the three candidates turned to the congregation to give these personal and moving statements:
William – I had a rough time recently. I feel the church is a safe place. Now I feel confident and more myself.
Bel – I have grown up within the family of this church and now felt like the right time to take the next step.
Ilona – As you know, I was baptised seven weeks ago. I now reaffirm my commitment to God. Today is the end of one journey and the beginning of another as I settle my feet more firmly in God’s soil and put my trust in his loving guidance.
Their confirmation was greeted with a round of applause from the congregation, and the service continued with Communion, another new step for William, Bel, and Ilona. It was a happy occasion that continued over drinks and cake at the end.
We congratulate all three, and wish them every blessing for their future journey of faith. Thank you to everyone who contributed in many different ways to making the evening a memorable and significant one.
