Syria – one week to help

b832f35c-ad0c-41ab-ae59-4801e39f9644

Our friends at Charlbury Refugee Action Committee have recently sent out an urgent appeal for food for refugees from Syria.  If you are able to contribute please do so.  They write:

People in Witney, Hook Norton, Oxford, Swindon and Wycombe are working together to fill a container which will take food to people in desperate need in Syria.

You can help in Charlbury too.

Aid workers in Syria risk their lives every day to provide vital and life saving aid to the victims of war! The aim is to fill a container with provisions which will be sent directly to Syria within the next few weeks, reaching people who are being bombed and slaughtered on a daily basis, and are presented from fleeing for refuge abroad.

If you can take part, our closing date is THURSDAY MAY 27 at 5 pm

Please…

• do not bring anything that is not on the list.
• please phone 01608 811378 or email charlburyrefugee@gmail.com to find your nearest drop-off point in or near Charlbury.
• rather than an assortment of items, please donate multiples or trays/cases of just one (or at most two) items. They are much easier to package.

How to contribute in cash

If you would like to contribute money to the Witney collection rather than buying things yourself, you can do so at https://www.gofundme.com/24jnsyus However, you are not able to add Gift Aid.

If you wish to donate direct to One Nation, who are the charity organising the filling of dozens of containers across the country, your money will go further if you pay income tax and apply Gift Aid (which increases the value of your donation by 25%). EU Referendum

On 23 June each of us will be asked to answer the question “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”  While the overarching question may itself seem simple, the sub questions it contains are multiple and complex and we are being bombarded daily in the media with claims and counter claims. How then should we as Christians make sense of this complexity? What should provide the lens through which we sort through all the information with which we will no doubt be bombarded over the coming weeks and months and come to some decision with integrity and in good faith?

At the request of a number of people in the Benefice we are trying to organise a meeting with an outside speaker to lead a discussion on this important issue.  So far we have been unsuccessful!

However, The Joint Public Issues Team of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Methodist Church, the United Reformed Church and the Church of Scotland has produced a useful,  balanced and impartial guide, with appropriate question and Bible references, which you can view here or pick up a copy from the back of Church.

You might like to use the following prayer.

Thy Kingdom Come

Thy-Kingdom-Come_Final
The Archbishop of Canterbury has called on all Anglicans to pray for the mission of the Church in the eight days leading up to Pentecost – May 15. Each one of us is called to live out our faith in word and action so that God’s kingdom of justice,
peace and love is seen on earth.

Each day during this week we are sending out ideas to help us all pray.

If you would like to receive them please subscribe to our e-Bulletin.

Below you will find some links to ideas to get you started.

We hope that there is something that helps you to pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’.

Daily Prayer

During this week we invite you to join us is saying either Morning or Night Prayer – or both!  These are very simple services and can be said in a quiet moment either at the beginning or ending of the day.  If you are able, light a candle and remember God is with you.

You can download a copy of the services and readings  here.

Helping our children to pray

The Diocese of Guildford has produced a really good resource to help parents and children pray together. We are inviting all the families that we have contact with in the Benefice to join us and be part of something huge as a family!

You can download the resource here – there is nothing complicated about it.
Have fun and join in by committing to a short time of prayer every day from
Sunday 8th – Sunday 15th May.

Invitation to Peace

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus promises peace to his disciples, though not as the world understands it (John 14.27).  Writing on the ROOTS website, Ann Conway-Jones invites us to spend some time with Rublev’s icon of the Trinity, and to be drawn into its circle of love.

Come join us at the table:
rest your feet, your soul.
Don’t try to speak,
but catch your breath,
align your gaze with ours.
This is a moment out of time:
allow eternity
to seep into your veins,
before returning to your tasks.

Candlemas Prayer

Candlemas Prayer

I left my candle burning. Lit from light
Borrowed from another,it stood there
Witness to Christ, Light of the world;
Prayer that light would overcome darkness.
As I left, another lit a candle from my light,
Dispelling gloom with added strength.
Who knows how many joined their light to those,
Or drew fresh courage from their company;
Who knows how many took a step, drawn by the
Light of Christ from darkness to new life?

Lord Christ, set me on fire.
Burn from me all that dims your light,
Kindle an answering flame in lives around;
That darkness may be driven back,
And glory stream into this world,
Transforming it with love.

Epiphany Reflection

Gold

Like the morning in the wing draws the dawn across the day
Like the glow upon the faces of children at play
Like the splendour of the love love held within the lover’s eyes
Are the rare and shining moments that brighten our lives
They sparkle and dance, then grow pale and fade away
But we hold them in our hearts and they warm a colder day
And give thanks for their gift and the promise they say
Of the chance to be surprised by the glory in the grey.

Frankincense

In the sweet familiar round of ordinary things
In the quiet reassurance that carefulness brings
In the blessing if the bread and the friendships that we share
In the everyday obedience of just being there
There is grace beyond measure and charm beyond compare
We are served in every moment by someone else’s care.
Oh give thanks for the life and the wisdom to say
We have power to discover the glory in the grey

Myrrh

When the shadows close around and we stumble on our way
And the Ashes of our dreams grow cold and grey
When the broken bread of life is bitter to the taste
And the ground on which we stand becomes a barren waste
In these moments of death, something new is coming to birth
And the rose of love grows strongest upon the blackest earth.
Oh give thanks for the love and the freedom to say
We are sharers in creating the glory in the grey.

Christmas in pictures

We had a fantastic Christmas in the Benefice this year with record numbers at all our services.  One of the highlights was having three week old baby Isaac as Jesus at the Chadlington Crib Service!

Thank you to all those who worked hard to make it so special.  Here are some memories ….
